A bill requiring all public schools in Montana to allow children to attend religious instruction has flown through both chambers.
House Bill 343 was brought by Republican state Rep. Randyn Gregg and squeezed through the Education committee in an 8-7 vote, before moving through the House on a 54-45 vote, before it moved onto the Senate back in March, according to KTVQ. The bill was transmitted to the Governor on May 5th, where it is hoped it will be signed into law.
The bill changes the current state statute regarding religious education from a “may” to a “shall,” if time is requested by parents or guardians for their children to be removed from class to receive such education. In layman’s terms: if you are a parent or guardian in Montana and you want your children to undergo some type of religious education, no one can stop you from removing your children from school to do so. “Additionally, the bill states that school board trustees may permit school credit for religious release time courses,” noted the Pro-Family Legislative Network in an email to Poll2Action.
