House lawmakers in Alabama voted in 2025 to increase the penalties for those convicted of raping children age less than six years old.
If Alabama’s HB 49 passes into law, anyone aged 18-years-old or older who is convicted in the first degree of raping a child aged less than six years will be sentenced to either life imprisonment without parole, or death. “Additionally, the legislation stipulates that if the person convicted is less than 18 years old, the sentence shall be life imprisonment without parole,” wrote the Pro-Family Legislative Network in an email to Poll2Action.
The bill comes amid a wave of pro-child, pro-family legislation throughout the U.S., particularly in places like Florida and Tennessee. Alabama’s House voted 85-5 to approve the bill in February, according to the Alabama Reflector. While some argue that one cannot be “pro-life” and “pro-killing people,” others, such as Pro-Family Legislative Network Rep. Matt Simpson say, “I believe you have a right to life, but your actions can cause you to lose that right.”
