The National Science Foundation has allocated approximately $1 million to a study exploring the classroom narratives around biological sex and their impact on transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming (TNG) students. This research, a collaborative effort conducted by Colorado State University, Florida International University, and the University of Minnesota, aims to examine the pedagogical approaches to sex and gender in undergraduate biology courses and the subsequent effects on the inclusion and academic climate for TNG students. The study, which started in June 2022 and will run through August 2025, includes participants from multiple racial, ethnic, and social backgrounds. While the commitment to investigating these narratives is clear, there has been critical feedback regarding the potential relevance and timeliness of the qualitative data upon the study’s completion.

Do you believe that the NSF-funded study on gender narratives will provide valuable insights for educational practices?
