The law decriminalizing hard drugs in Oregon has led to an alarming increase in drug use and related fatalities, particularly due to fentanyl. The surge in drug-related issues has spurred lawmakers to reconsider their approach, with proposals to reclassify drug possession as a Class C misdemeanor. This move would replace the current $100 citation with a month’s jail sentence, a $1,250 fine, or both. The situation has deteriorated so drastically that it’s been described as a “failed experiment” by House Republican Minority Leader Jeff Helfrich, who served as a police officer in Portland for over 25 years.
