A survey published by WalletHub in late July found the best and worst states for healthcare in 2024. Where does your state rank?
Minnesota ranked #1 overall for having the best healthcare systems, followed closely by Rhode Island, South Dakota, Iowa, and New Hampshire. “Minnesota is the best state for health care, boasting the highest number of convenient care clinics per capita. It’s also relatively inexpensive to get health care in the state, as Minnesota has the fourth-lowest average out-of-pocket medical spending and the sixth-lowest average monthly insurance premium,” WalletHub wrote in their analysis. What Is The Worst State?
The worst state for healthcare was Mississippi, despite having the second highest number of hospital beds per capita. The state ranked in the Top 5 worst states for number of dentists, lowest number of insured adults, and was the worst state for infant mortality.
Residents of Mississippi also have the highest stroke and heart disease rate and had the lowest number of adults who’d gone for a dental visit in the last year. (TAKE A POLL: Is it Okay For Religious Symbols to be in Public Spaces?)
Experts Reveal Other Major Issues
“One major issue I’ve been thinking about is how to rebuild the healthcare workforce. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare workforce shrank substantially. Even during the Great Recession (the biggest recession in my lifetime), the healthcare workforce did not shrink; healthcare employment has always been called “recession-proof”, and the COVID-19 recession is the exception that proves the rule,” said University of Chicago professor Matthew Notowidigdo.
