New legislation in the United Kingdom could make praying at home a risk if someone lives within 150 meters of an abortion provider.

Citizens in Scotland living within buffer zones — areas around abortion clinics that British law does not allow people to pray within — were sent letters warning them that they could violate the law while inside their own homes, according to CBN. Some people believe the law could make it hard for people to pray near windows if a woman seeking an abortion walks by.

It is already illegal to pray near abortion clinics, as many Brits have discovered in recent years. “A little over two years ago, the British government charged Adam Smith-Connor, a 51-year-old physiotherapist and an army veteran with the heinous crime of standing 50 meters from an abortion clinic and silently praying for three minutes, not obstructing anyone, not interacting with anyone, just silently praying on his own,” Vice President JD Vance said in a speech in February in Munich, describing just one example of how the laws are used to prosecute nonviolent Christians exercising free speech and thought.

What Does The Law State?

The buffer zone legislation makes it ” … illegal for anyone to do anything that intentionally or recklessly influences someone’s decision to use abortion services… The law will apply within a 150 metre radius of the abortion service provider.” (MORE NEWS: Mystery Illness Infects Hundreds, Kills 50 In Developing Nation)

“By using a word like ‘influence,’ it’s very unclear what the law means. What about a mother asking her daughter, ‘Are you sure?’ Is that an ‘influence’? What about a friend who’s offering support to a woman who’s considering continuing her pregnancy? Is that ‘influence’?” Alliance Defending Freedom International’s Lois McLatchie Miller told the outlet.
