Texas is currently considering a bill that aims to protect children from overreach by the state when it comes to cases of severe mental health.

House Bill 1106 is sponsored by Rep. Matt Shaheen, and “drew testimony from many constituents both in support of and in opposition to the bill. Nevertheless, the protection it offers is straightforward and necessary,” wrote the Pro-Family Legislative Network. (TAKE A POLL: Are you still paying too much for food?)

The purpose of the bill is to clarify that “abuse” and “neglect” do not include a parent’s or legal guardian’s “refusal to affirm a child’s expressed sexual orientation or gender identity, or to address the child by their preferred name or pronouns—regardless of whether the child has legally changed their name.” In layman’s terms, a mentally ill child who has been convinced they can scientifically change their gender cannot be removed from parents and/or guardians who refuse to indulge this illness. The bill comes amid growing backlash from adults who underwent so-called “gender transition surgeries” in their youth, which left many of them permanently scarred, mutilated, and sterile.
