The country of Papua New Guinea in Oceania officially declared its Christian identity on March 12, 2025.
Papua New Guinea is home to roughly 11 million people, 90% of whom are Christian, according to La Croix International. The amendment was passed by a large majority of the nation’s leaders (80 to 4) and modified the nation’s Constitution, to read that “(We, the people of Papua New Guinea) acknowledge and declare God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit as our Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe and the source of our powers and authorities, delegated to the people and all persons under the geographical jurisdiction of Papua New Guinea.”
The purpose of the change is to unite the nation under Christian values and share in His light through celebration, history, and future development. The goal of the nation’s leader Prime Minister James Marape is to make Papua New Guinea “the richest Black Christian nation on planet Earth,” the outlet noted. Solution to Challenges?
The amendment does not stop people of other faiths from freely practicing. “To become ‘rich,’ Papua New Guinea can only rely on Christianity for personal honesty, altruism, and a general sense of the common good — qualities that politicians and the bureaucracy fail to achieve. For the rest, it needs education, investments, and infrastructure,” wrote Father Giorgio Licini, former secretary general of the Bishops’ Conference of Papua New Guinea, in an op-ed published in Asia News.
