Lawmakers approved SB 11 in March, which would allow for a moment of prayer or reading from Christian texts throughout the school day, something we thought we’d celebrate today, on our National Day of Prayer.
“Religious freedom is a bedrock principle upon which America was founded, recognizing our rights come directly from God, not the government. I prioritized SB 11 to make sure religious freedom is not infringed upon in Texas, ensuring our students and educators have the right to pray on school grounds. I thank Sen. Middleton for carrying this bill and for senators on both sides of the aisle for their support on this critical legislation,” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said on the bipartisan passage of SB 11. The success of the bill was led by Sen. Mayes Middleton, and will be implemented in the 2025-2026 school year. “In Texas, our schools are not God-free zones. Bill 11 is about providing a space for free expression of our religion in public schools and open-enrollment charter schools,” Middleton said of the bill. “The bill does not make participation in prayer or reading religious texts compulsory. The period provided under this bill does not replace or supplant any elective course or classes that a student may take as part of their education. It is simply meant to allow a time for students and faculty to express their religion freely.”
