Montana state lawmakers passed SB 163 in early April, ensuring that data collected using forms of advanced neurotechnology is kept safe.
“The Montana Constitution guarantees our basic right to privacy. Our deepest thoughts and ideas are incredibly personal, and this bill protects them from potential risks linked to new technologies that focus on the brain,” said bill sponsor Sen. Daniel Zolnikov, who has actively worked on making Montana a leader in data and privacy guarantees since 2013, according to Billings Mix. (RELATED POLL: Do You Trust Science?)
The bill essentially blocks companies from using any type of advanced technologies to collect our brainwaves, a very-real possibility in the near future as more and more people lean into understanding how to harness the potential power of our minds.
Once signed into law, organizations will now have to inform individuals and gain permissions before collecting, using, or sharing data related to neurotechnology, which includes personal thoughts and ideas.
