A Florida man and his family were overwhelmed with joy after receiving the Community Hero Lighting surprise from Florida Power and Light, days after losing almost all of their earthly possessions.

Every year, Florida Power and Light (FPL) gives one family a special surprise — in 2024, the surprise went to Coast Guardsman Desmond Nelton, according to ABC3. The company provided Nelton and his kinfolk with a “candy cane lane and colorful lights” covering his home. “I was wondering like what is all this,” Nelton told the outlet. “What’s going on? Then I pull up to the house, then I see all these people in my yard. You know, it’s an amazing surprise. It’s just a good feeling.”

FPL partnered with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society to get the Nelton family a holiday they deserve — not only does Mr. Nelton serve this great country, but the family was hit with tragedy earlier this year. (POLL: Would You Rather Cook or Bake?)

California Strikes Again

The Nelton family were all packed up and ready to move from their California home to Northwest Florida when the worst happened. “As we’re loading up everything into our U-Haul, to move out here, somebody stole our truck with everything that we owned,” Nelton told the outlet. The family are still working to get back on their feet, but the surprise from FPL was an exciting gift for them this Christmas season, according to ABC3. “This is a special way to do something special for a family that can use a little extra cheer or has done so much for the community,” FPL spokesperson Sarah Gatewood said of the surprise. “And it’s just a way for us to say thank you and give back a little bit.”
