Montana enacted legislation in May that limits the authority of the Department of Environmental Quality in going beyond the limits set at the federal level.
“Last year, the Montana Supreme Court issued a series of rulings that if left unchecked would have impacted Montana’s energy sector at time when Americans have seen electricity costs soar nearly 30 percent in the last four years,” Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte said in a statement following the bill’s passage in early May. “This package of legislation reduces red tape and provides certainty to small and large businesses across our state.” (MORE NEWS: Kansas Overrides Gov. The Gov. signed five energy related bills in early May. One of those bills, HB 291, was sponsored by Republican state Rep. Greg Oblander. The language of the bill “makes it clear that the State of Montana cannot adopt air quality standards that are stricter than the federal government’s, except in specific circumstances.”
The hope is that the bills will build upon Montana’s energy sector, creating clarity for businesses through the cutting of red tape.
