The U.S. energy grid is not secure, and it hasn’t been for a very long time. Texas is moving to do something about this glaring gap in our national security by signing Senate Bill 75 into law.
SB 75 focuses on improving the resilience of the grid, hoping to mitigate threats to the elderly, vulnerable, and underprivileged within the state. But the bill also targets protections for the 16 sectors identified in the Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience policy directive instituted under former President Barack Obama. These include: chemical, commercial facilities, communications, critical manufacturing, dams, defense industrial base, emergency services, energy, financial services, food and agriculture, government facilities, health care and public health, information technology, nuclear reactors, materials, and waste, transportation systems, water and wastewater systems. Others suffered, while the economy took a significant hit. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that many residents were forced into warming centers that may have led to a greater spread of the disease.
