North Carolina’s House Rules committee voted in favor of HB 821 in mid-May, a bill that would allow drivers in the state up to two years to renew an expired license.
Lawmakers in N.C. say the one of the most common complaints they receive from voters and constituents is how long it takes to deal with absolutely anything at the state’s DMV, according to NC Newsline. At the core of the issue is wait times on appointments, with most offices having limited availability, often months in the waiting. Many residents choose to spend five to seven hours at the offices, arriving before sunrise to hopefully be seen as a walk-in.
“I arrived at my local DMV around 6:40 a.m. and there was a line of about 20 people. A lady came out at seven [a.m.] and told us that everyone without an appointment would have to wait until noon to be seen. A lot of people left, so I stayed, but it was still six and a half hours before I was seen,” one N.C. resident told Poll2Action. (TAKE ANOTHER POLL: Should We Defund Terrorists?)
“It’s like that show ‘Severance’ but you know your life on the outside,” he added. “The DMV office is a very liminal space.”
