Louisiana’s House of Representatives passed a bill in mid-May that would protect the freedom of worship in churches and other places of worship.

House Bill 371 was passed on May 14, 2025 in a vote of 79-9. It was referred to the Senate on May 19 and is (at the time of writing) pending. The legislation is seen as essential as a result of measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic that restricted the free movement of Americans.

“The bill states that the government shall provide protections of the highest order to every church or other place of worship and shall not discriminate against any church or other place of worship by requiring restrictions that are greater than the least severe restrictions that are imposed upon or enforced against any secular business, service, or assembly,” the Pro-Family Legislative Network wrote in an email shared with Poll2Action. The bill is sponsored by PLFN member Rep. Beryl Amedee. “Additionally, the bill establishes that if a place of worship meets specific zoning and safety requirements, the government cannot restrict its use based on the day of the week, the content of religious activities, or for programs such as Vacation Bible Schools,” wrote Fast Democrasy in their summary document.
