GO BankingRates published an article in late Dec. 2024 featuring commentary from auto expert Chris Pyle on what he believes the best affordable cars will be in the year ahead.

It’s easy to ask yourself: what is “affordable.” For the purposes of their article GO asked Pyle what he believed the best cars would be for under $20,000 in 2025. His first choice? The Nissan Versa, which he called the “reliable choice” for car owners. The best thing about the Versa is that its lengthy production means most of the problems are worked out. It gets good gas mileage, has enough space for family, and long-term reliability proven in its longevity. (READ MORE: US Holiday Budgets By City)

Up next was the Kia Forte, which has more of an “upscale feel,” says Pyle. “The interior is really nice on this model and the warranty is really good if purchased new,” Pyle explained. It is apparently a “budget car that doesn’t feel budget.”

What Else?

Pyle went onto a “mixed bag” vehicle: the Mitsubishi Mirage. He says he sees a lot of repair issues with this particular vehicle, but don’t let that dissuade you. “That can be because it is popular so there’s a larger pool of failures known about, or it can be that many high school and college kids get them as gifts but drive them poorly.” (POPULAR POLL: Can you make rent this month?)

But Pyle’s “hidden deal” for 2025 is the Kia Soul. “Sometimes you can find a base model that has been reduced a lot to move it off the lot,” Pyle says, but the car is great for small families, even those with car seats. There’s good cargo space, but they’re not that common. And “they’re ugly,” Pyle says.
