Representatives for the state of Tennessee announced a new nuclear energy development program in Oct. 2024, calling it a “second Manhattan project.”
Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee announced “Project IKE,” which is set to move forward in the Oak Ridge area in partnership with Orano USA, according to The Cool Down. “Tennessee is the No. 1 state for nuclear energy companies to invest and thrive, and we are proud to partner with Orano to lead America’s energy independence and drive continued economic growth and greater opportunity for Tennesseans,” Lee said in a statement.
Orano apparently “specializes in uranium mining/conversion/enrichment, used nuclear fuel management and recycling, decommissioning shutdown nuclear energy facilities, federal site clean-up and closure and developing nuclear medicines to fight cancer.” (TAKE A POLL: Is Climate Change Primarily Caused By Human Activity?)
Is Nuclear Power Renewable?
Nuclear power cannot be considered a “renewable” energy because “hey are a finite material mined from the ground and can only be found in certain locations,” according to the National Grid. The extremely limited amount of fuel needed to power a nuclear power station, they’re seen as a far cleaner alternative to traditional oil and gas drilling. (POLL: Should the Government Reduce Regulations on Businesses?)
“Nuclear power stations use a miniscule amount of fuel to generate the same amount of electricity that a coal or gas power station would (for example, 1 kg of uranium contains the same amount of energy as 2.7 million kg of coal), so nuclear fuel is considered to be a reliable source of energy for decades to come.”
