Maine and Colorado have declared former President Donald Trump ineligible for the 2024 Presidential race. Maine’s Democratic Secretary of State Shenna Bellows cited a Civil War-era insurrection clause to bar Trump from the ballot, sparking immediate appeals from Trump’s campaign. In Colorado, the Supreme Court ruled by a narrow 3-4 vote to deny Trump’s placement on the ballot, with the majority justices expressing the gravity of their decision. This is the first time in history a former president has been deemed ineligible to run for presidency due to a Constitutional clause that prevents officials found guilty of “insurrection or rebellion” from running for office.
