The idea of term limits has raised its head again within the 2024 election cycle, with bipartisan support for the movement seeming to grow amongst regular citizens and politicians alike.
In summer 2023, Pew Research Center found that 87% of Americans support term limits for Members of Congress. “There’s a lot of dysfunction in our politics, particularly within Congress,” George Washington University legislative affairs director Casey Burgat told NPR at the time. “Congress is one of the most unpopular institutions we have. Part of the reason many voters started supporting term limits is because of what many feel is the obvious mental decline exhibited by many leading American politicians today, U.S. Term Limits (USTL) executive director Nick Tomboulides alluded to in 2023.
Do Voters Still Want Limits?
Tomboulides’ advocacy group now boasts countless candidates and lawmakers who openly express their support for term limits. One recent example is Democratic candidate for West Virginia, Jonathan Haught. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Think the Current Voting System is Fair?)
“Jonathan’s strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians,” USTL president Philip Blumel said in a statement.
Ultimately, there’s no way to know specifically how instituting term limits for Congress would reshape American politics. There’s a good chance it would mean greater change at a faster pace, but we’ll never know unless it is something that you want!
