In April 2024, the Vatican issued a 20-page Dignitas Infinita document rejecting a variety of practices seen as violating human dignity. One of these issues was surrogacy. But why is this such a big issue for the Vatican?
There are two different types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational. In the latter, a woman is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm, making the surrogate the biological mother of the child. Gestational surrogacy uses a combination of IVF, wherein the biological mother and father’s sperm and egg are used to create an embryo before being implanted in a separate woman to be carried to term (WebMD).

Pope Francis stunned many earlier in 2024 when he said “a child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract” of the practice of surrogacy. Even though most people associate Christianity with being pro-life, there are many who also oppose the issue of surrogacy on grounds that it “goes against God’s protection of children. The Demand For Surrogacy Has Grown
Writer Mary Rooke argues the practice of surrogacy has become far more popular in recent years thanks to celebrities like the Kardashians. The practice often costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, meaning our “elites are signaling that they aren’t willing to sacrifice their job, body, or status for pregnancy. It won’t be long until society as a whole sees pregnancy as a poor woman’s job. Paying for a surrogate is already a status symbol.” Rooke states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that surrogacy has the highest rate of success across all fertility treatments, according to one agency. “I had so many complications. I had this condition called placenta accreta. There were a couple little operations to fix all that, so that created a little hole in my uterus, which I think made it really tough to get pregnant again,” Kim Kardashian said of her decision to use a surrogate, according to Tyla.
