Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill Friday (May 9) protecting free speech for teachers, students, professors, and public employees throughout the state.

“A student, teacher, employee, or contractor of a public school or LEA should never be compelled to affirm a belief with which the student, teacher, employee, or contractor disagrees,” states the legislation, which is being seen as a means of combating the growth in censorship and silencing of free speech throughout public institutions. A study recently conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression found that more than a thousand students were targeted in some way in the last five years for exercising their free speech while attending various U.S. colleges and universities. The bill “prohibits disciplinary action against a student or adverse action against a school contractor for failure to use a preferred pronoun that is inconsistent with the preferer’s biological sex.”

Employees throughout these institutions are also prohibited from asking students and others for their preferred pronouns. (TAKE ANOTHER POLL: Should Tax Dollars Fund Child Sex Change Surgeries?)
