Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is sending upwards of $2.5 million to the small town of Springfield to deal with an influx of illegal Haitian migrants that have overwhelmed services and crushed the community, according to The Associated Press.
DeWine does not oppose the “Temporary Protected Status” of the migrant population, estimated to be anywhere from 15,000 to 20,000, increasing the town’s population by one third. But after years of inaction, he is finally receiving support from the federal government to help curb the problem. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Feel Confident About the Current State of the Economy?)
“These dramatic surges impact every citizen of the community, every citizen,” DeWine said in September. “Moms who have to wait hours in a waiting room with a sick child, everyone who drives on the streets, and it affects children who go to school in more crowded classrooms.”
Rise In Crime And Traffic Accidents
“On Wednesday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be dispatched to help local law enforcement with traffic issues that officials say have cropped up due to an increase in Haitians unfamiliar with U.S. traffic laws using the roads. DeWine said he is also earmarking $2.5 million over two years to provide more primary healthcare through the county health department and private healthcare institutions,” The AP wrote, before adding that DeWine operates a charity in Haiti.
The New York Post noted that there are many reports of the new migrant populations hunting and killing local area ducks and potentially other small animals as a source of food. (LEARN MORE: Noncitizens Allowed To Vote In Some Local Elections)
