There is no simple answer to this question as everyone has their own feelings about whether or not Christians should celebrate Valentine’s Day. In this article, we’ll explore the arguments for and against, and what the ultimate answer should really be …

Those In Favor …

Valentine’s Day may not be considered one of the more key Christian holidays, but some say it goes back to the one or more martyrs named Valentine, all of whom died for their Christian faith. However, the exact origin of St. Valentine’s is murky within Christianity, which many feel make it less of a spiritual holiday, and more of an opportunity to share in love.

Every day should be an opportunity for you to celebrate your love, so why not treat February 14th as an excuse to be extra loving with your spouse? Surely there’s no harm in that?

Those Against

Some feel that Valentine’s Day may be a co-opted pagan festival, and therefore should not be celebrated by Christians. (LEARN MORE: Valentine’s Day May Be Cute, But Has Dark Origins)

“Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish” (Deuteronomy 8:19), quotes Tom Clark for Life, Hope & Truth, under the argument that celebrating Valentine’s Day is worshipping a false god.

“Some may want to argue that Valentine’s Day isn’t really that religious anymore, so these scriptures don’t apply. But that argument ignores the clear origins and the ancient focus on illicit sexual activity that was part of this practice,” Clark added in his argument.
