We’re in a new year, so you know what time it is: time to start your first plants of 2025!
Some of you might be reading this thinking, “What?! Planting a garden in February? You must be insane!” For many of us, we’re dealing with fluctuating outdoor temperatures, crazy rain patterns, and either sudden or constant frost. This is why February is the best month to start sewing your seeds indoors, ready to be transplanted once the weather warms up!
Some parts of the country allow for outdoor sewing at this time of year. But if you’re anything like us, you don’t want to risk losing your precious seedlings too soon in an uncertain season. Sewing your first crops indoors is a great way to mitigate loss, and weed out the weakest seeds before the real work begins in the spring. What Can You Start To Grow In February?
According to Gardenary, you can plant the following seeds this month:
- Eggplant
- Okra
- Thai basil
- Sweet potatoes
- Zinnias
- Leaf greens like lettuce, spinach, arugula, mizuna, and mustard greens
Once you’re through your last frost, you can look at getting into growing tomatoes and peppers outdoors if you haven’t already started inside. Don’t forget flowers too! Along with zinnias, marigolds are a great addition to any garden. These pretty things are especially great for vegetable and fruit gardens as they work as a type of natural pest control.
