Did you know that some noncitizens are given the right to vote in local elections?

While most local elections do not legally allow noncitizens and illegal immigrants to vote, some places make it easier. For example, parts of California will likely allow noncitizens and potentially illegal immigrants to vote by November 2028, if not before. “If I had the opportunity to vote I could choose the people I want to represent me — people who understand my needs and my issues,” one resident of California, who is not an American citizen, told the LA Times earlier this year. “Without the right to vote I feel segregated from my community.”

Thousands of people who feel this way will likely have the right to vote in local elections by 2028 if the city passes a ballot measure allowing them the right. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Rely on Technology For Most of Your Daily Activities?)

“Noncitizens range from individuals who are permanent residents in the United States to those who are undocumented. It can include those who have work permits, are refugees or are here under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. Depending on the jurisdiction, there are at times certain criteria a noncitizen must meet to be able to vote in local elections,” the LA Times wrote in their coverage.

Every Vote Counts

There are growing concerns that illegal immigrants and noncitizens will be able to vote in the November 2024 election. “Even if you weren’t concerned about the drop boxes and the ballot harvesting of mail-in ballots in 2020 you definitely should be concerned that illegal aliens might be voting in 2024,” U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said earlier in 2024.
