North Carolina is currently considering banning children from using social media without parental consent if they are aged 15 and under.
House Bill 301 is specifically designed to ban social media use for kids unless their parents sign off on it. “Social media companies would be required to terminate all unauthorized accounts for minors and ensure that personal data is deleted,” explained the Pro-Family Legislative Network in an email received by Poll2Action. “According to the Office of the Surgeon General, 40% of children aged 8–12 are on social media, where there are an estimated 500,000 predators seeking to exploit kids each day,” PFLN member Rep. Jeff Zenger said of the legislation. “You’re hard-pressed to find anybody to say there’s any good thing about kids being on social media.” A majority of social media platforms already try to keep kids off the site by asking for information on their ages, but these verifications are often easy to break through.
