A near-Earth asteroid called 2024 YR4 no longer poses a significant threat to Earth after causing quite a stir at NASA.
“When first discovered, asteroid 2024 YR4 had a very small, but notable chance of impacting our planet in 2032,” NASA said in a statement shared in late Feb. “As observations of the asteroid continued to be submitted to the Minor Planet Center, experts at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL’s) Center for Near-Earth Object Studies were able to calculate more precise models of the asteroid’s trajectory and now have updated its impact probability on Dec. 22, 2032 to only 0.004% and found there is no significant potential for this asteroid to impact our planet for the next century.”
What About The Moon?
There is a 1.7% chance 2024 YR hits the Moon, and observations are ongoing. There is a chance NASA and its partners use the asteroid to further research on Earth’s planetary defense systems. (USE YOUR VOICE: Are You a fan of President Trump’s Cabinet?)
At one point, there was a 2.3% chance the asteroid would hit Earth with potentially enough power to wipe out a major city. On Feb. 19, NASA estimated 2024 YR to be 130-300 feet across. Whether it explodes during its journey toward Earth, or makes a direct impact as a single object, it would have the power several hundred times that of nuclear explosions, according to Northeastern.
What Else Is In Our Skies?
Before the fear of a city-killer asteroid plagued our headlines, the world wondered who was flying drones all over New Jersey. Law enforcement and locals alike were up in arms over the giant flying robots visiting the skies above the state, night after night, for what appears to be weeks, according to NewsNation. No one in government provided an answer, adding fuel to the mystery, spawning endless conspiracy theories.
Within days of entering office, President Donald Trump’s White House revealed that the drones were approved by the FAA under the Biden administration and were nothing to be concerned about.
