Did you know that many schools across the U.S. are switching to some type of remote learning schedule?
While remote learning might sound all new and technical, it is actually more of a return to the norm for our species. For thousands of years, humans mostly taught their children at home before they went out into the world. Schools were reserved for the wealthy or often highly-skilled. For example, women with disabilities have often been overlooked or excluded from traditional educational settings, according to Women’s eNews. Online and remote learning has liberated this demographic of Americans, allowing for rapid growth in career potential, peer support, and destigmatization.
Not All Remote Learning Is Wanted
In other cases, remote learning is more of a necessity than a preference. Many New Jersey high schools have had to switch to remote learning because of a staffing shortage amongst teachers, according to the Hudson Reporter. In Woodland Hills, Pittsburgh, the district switched to remote learning as a result of swatting hoaxes against their institutions, Hoodline reported. Infrastructure issues at Langston University in Oklahoma means many areas of campus are closed, forcing students into online learning. “It’s frustrating, because trying to find classroom space right now is almost impossible as it is,” said on professor. “We just want to do our jobs. We want to be with students. Everybody’s burned out on Zoom as it is from COVID. The students are burned out on Zoom, and it’s hard to engage.”
