Louisiana House Bill 125 passed the house in May, moving to protect state citizens genomic information from certain foreign entities.
The bill is designed to protect genomic information from entering the hands of foreign entities who could use it to harm Americans, according to the Pro-Family Legislative Network. Lawmakers, such as the bill’s sponsor Rep. Dodie Horton, also moved to include language placing limits on how genomic information is used after it has been collected.
For example, law makers want to prohibit the use of certain genetic sequencers and software, as well as limits on where the data can be stored and accessed. (MORE NEWS: Parental Protection On App Store Backed By 80% Of Parents, Says Meta)
What is genomic data and why does it matter?
Genomic data is the genetic information that makes up each of us. Analyzing this data tells us our exact DNA sequence, including all different genes and variants that make us unique individuals, according to Datavant.
“Genomic variations play a critical role in numerous human diseases, spanning from common conditions like hypertension to complex disorders such as cancer and rare diseases. Precision therapies often aim to address specific genetic mutations underlying these diseases and driving their progression,” the site notes.
