Lawmakers in the 119th Congress are seeking to amend the the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act to reauthorize the National Volcano Early Warning and Monitoring System.
The National Volcano Early Warning Systems (NVEWS) is a national-scale plan that helps to ensure all volcanoes are monitored to assess the level of potential risk and threat to life and property in the event of an eruption, according to USGS. While many people do not realize it, there are roughly 169 active volcanoes in the U.S., along with countless dormant volcanoes — ones that haven’t erupted recently, but absolutely still could.
There are at least 36 dormant volcanoes across the lower 48 states that have not erupted in potentially thousands of years, but this doesn’t mean they won’t erupt at some point in the future. (POLLS: Are You Concerned About The Energy Grid?)
“Alaska is home to more than 130 volcanoes and many of them active. Their potential impact on aviation, energy, and communities in Alaska is significant,” said Congressman Nick Begich in a statement accompanying his introduction of the bill. “Reauthorizing this critical system ensures that we remain prepared and proactive in protecting Alaskans and our infrastructure from future eruptions. This legislation is a smart investment in safety and commonsense governance.”
