House Republicans released their House Energy and Commerce (E&C) bill in early May, which includes provisions to defund Planned Parenthood and ban the use of tax dollars for child gender mutilation surgeries.
The E&C bill comes amid the department’s task of identifying some $880 billion in cuts over the next decade, helping to pay for major tax priorities from President Donald Trump’s second administration, according to the Daily Caller. “[E]very GOP House member, even the pro-choice ones, must do the right thing and vote to pass it and end forced taxpayer funding of abortion,” Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins said shortly after the bill’s release. Many also praised the legislation for all-out banning the use of Medicaid (taxpayer) dollars in “child sex change procedures,” the outlet noted. “The federal government shouldn’t be subsidizing these procedures in any form, and I am proud that we will be protecting all our children from the lasting, harmful effects of these procedures,” said Wall Street Journal writer Brett Guthrie in an article on the legislation.
