TAKE THE POLL: CLICK HERE

You may have heard that in August 2024, a federal judge found Google’s search business constitutes an illegal monopoly. But what does this mean?

“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” U.S. District judge Amit Mehta found. This essentially means that Google signed contracts, including Apple, to become the default search engine on their devices. As result, Google has the power to control and manipulate search results.

The case was initially brought under the Trump administration, according to Vox, but the outlet congratulated the Biden administration on the win. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Believe Artificial Intelligence Will Create More Jobs Than It Eliminates?)

What Happens Next?

Most people have no idea what happens next, but there are some interesting ideas. The ruling, which Google will likely appeal, could mean the company is no-longer the default page on most of our browsers. We may end up being taken somewhere else when we search.

And if a better engine comes along, something powered by artificial intelligence or something similar. Maybe each individual will find their preferred search engine. It really depends on how consumers and the technology industry respond to the potential for change. (TAKE A POLL: Are You Concerned About Political Corruption?)

“The behavior of Google was very similar to the behavior of Microsoft, and so that similarity allowed the Justice Department to show the judge that this conduct really fit into that same pattern and therefore should be treated the same way, namely made illegal,” Yale professor Fiona Scott Morton said.
