Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the App Store Accountability Act in May, 2025, requiring app store operators to verify the age of all users.

Age verification will be required for all users of app stores like Google and Apple, hoping to prevent minors from making in-app purchases or gaining access to adult content available on cell phones. Texas is the second state to pass such a law, joining Utah who passed similar legislation in March, according to Fox. “The App Store Accountability Act is about putting parents back in the driver’s seat regarding their children’s devices,” state Sen. Angela Paxton said, according to Fox News. “Big tech should not be deciding what’s appropriate for our kids – that’s the role of parents.”

“This law reflects the values of Texas families,” Paxton added. “Parents deserve transparency, accountability, and real tools – not empty promises – from Big Tech.” (MORE: Commission To Study And Promote Traditional Marriage And Family Created In Texas)

“We believe there are better proposals that help keep kids safe without requiring millions of people to turn over their personal information,” an Apple spokesperson said, according to OANN, without adding or clarifying what any of those proposals may be or why they haven’t already been instituted by the organizations.
