Florida Senate Bill 1768, sponsored by Sen. Jay Trumbull, passed both chambers in recent weeks as politicians move in favor of supporting research into stem cell therapies.
The purpose of SB 1768 is to create “ethical guidelines for stem cell therapies, specifically prohibiting the use of non-FDA-approved treatments involving embryonic stem cells derived from abortions,” writes the Pro-Family Legislative Network in an email received by Poll2Action. The bill promotes the use of adult stem cells and makes biotherapies more available, while increasing patient safety by giving doctors a better baseline of confidence through new means of informed consent, adds Florida Politics.
What Can Stem Cells Be Used For?
Stem cells are the bits of our body that can create more cells like themselves, according to the Mayo Clinic. Even though there are different types of stem cell, research suggests they could be used to help maintain and repair organs and tissue. There is also an interest in understanding how stem cells interact with diseases, and whether they can truly generate healthy cells impacted by various diseases. “People who might benefit from stem cell therapies include those with leukemia, Hodgkin disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and some solid tumor cancers. Stem cell therapies also might benefit people who have aplastic anemia, immunodeficiencies and inherited conditions of metabolism,” the Mayo Clinic adds.
