A teacher from Colbert County School System started educating her students about financial literacy, saying the sooner kids learn this stuff, the better, according to November news report.

“I would like to start teaching them starting back in the third grade,” teacher Teresa Billingsley told WAFF. “The sooner, the better, learning how to manage your money because it will hopefully make them responsible consumers in the future in knowing how to manage their money at an early age.”

Students at the local Colbert Heights High School are volunteering both their time and knowledge to help kids at the elementary school about needs versus wants, budgeting, and other aspects of financial literacy.

Financial Literacy Curriculums

The Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission, established in 2019 after the passage of House Bill 139, mandates requirements for financial literacy education in Kentucky high schools. “Financial literacy is more important than ever in preparing our students for the challenges of adulthood,” said commission Executive Director Jennifer Inman. “With the upgrade to FoolProof, we are providing educators throughout Kentucky with the tools they need to deliver engaging, effective and inclusive financial education.”

Some want a revolution in our education system, pushing parents to be up-in-arms about the widespread failures of public education. “What I don’t see here is enough families taking responsibility for their kids. There are parents out there who are outraged and challenging the system. But it is not enough. Where are the boycotts? Where are the shutdowns?
