Elected officials in Tennessee apparently went a little ballistic in mid-April over House Bill 0622, knowm as the “Dismantle DEI Act.”

The eruption happened when a group of lawmakers, who were said to be against the bill, got into a heated discussion over a potential amendment to the bill, according to WSMV. The situation was quickly deescalated and a vote was taken to pass the bill.

“What happened today wasn’t just a political maneuver—it was a violation of our responsibility to the people of Tennessee,” House Democratic Leader Karen Camper said of the situation. “My colleagues and I were prepared to speak on behalf of our constituents, to oppose a bill that undermines fairness and opportunity for all Tennesseans. Instead, we were silenced.” (MORE NEWS: Chaplains Could Be Heading Back To Schools Across Multiple States)

“Every Tennessean deserves an equal opportunity for employment based on their abilities, not their background,” noted Republican Rep. Aron Maberry, who introduced the bill along with Sen. Jack Johnson, in the hopes of preventing state and local governments from making hiring decisions based on non-technical abilities such as race, gender, age, or disability. “The Dismantle DEI Act promotes fairness, merit, and efficiency in local governments and public universities. It champions equality, not anti-diversity, and encourages inclusion through fair and unbiased hiring practices.”
