Studies published throughout 2024 revealed that 31% of U.S. workers is unhappy with their work-life balance, compared to 18% amongst Europeans.

Yes, we can make jokes about how Europeans don’t work as hard as Americans, but is there more to this statistic than just the amount we work? Roughly 60% of us don’t take more than two weeks off per year, while those who do report feelings of guilt at a rate of 33%, according to the data. These figures differ from place to place, particularly here at home. Louisiana has the highest rates of burnout amongst workers, followed closely by West Virginia, according to Forbes. Places like Hawaii rank really high on “worst states to work” lists, typically because it has the lowest disposable income rates for workers, according to ALM. Then again, Hawaii has the highest happiness index, suggesting there’s more to work than just money.

What Are Other Terrible States For Workers?

South Carolina ranked #10 on ALM’s list of “worst” states to work, largely because it has a low disposable income score and ranks extremely low for work-life balance challenges. It was followed closely by Arizona, where the average work week is a little over the standard 40 hours at 40.6. (POPULAR ARTICLE: Bernie Sanders Says RFK Jr.’s Food Comments Are ‘Correct’)

Along with being one of the worst places for burnout, West Virginia ranked dead last for workplace safety and had the lowest happiness index on the ALM list. Long commute times are largely to blame for the lack of work-life balance, but these are among many issues hitting residents. Indiana, Vermont, Nevada, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Louisiana also made the top of the list, largely due to issues revolving around cost-of-living versus disposable income and safety concerns within the workplace.
