Did you know that Alaska is a little different to the rest of the U.S. when it comes to celebrating Christmas?
You’d think that Alaska would be the best place to spend your Christmas holidays, and you’d probably be right — if you like the cold! Alaskans apparently start hanging their decorations all the way back in September, just in case December turns into a 30-below month of temperatures, according to Carey Seward.
Despite these harsh conditions, Alaskans have an outside and an inside Christmas tree. The inside tree is typically the top 6 feet of a 100-foot tall spruce, the rest of which is then used for firewood. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Celebrate Christmas?)
Winter Activities
Alaskans get the unique opportunity of visiting sculpture parks, skating on frozen lakes, and waking up in the middle of the night to see the Northern Lights twinkle through the sky. Christmas hockey is also a core pastime, often played outside. The game is followed by salmon, because they “ALWAYS eat wild Alaskan salmon,” Seward explained. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Have Kids?)
Another article published on the same site says visitors should definitely come to Alaska for the Christmas season. There’s even a “North Pole” where the kiddos can meet Santa! The “Santa House” in Juneau also offers magical lights and many towns put on Christmas plays. Alaska certainly sounds like a fun place for Christmas tradition!
