The Alabama House approved a bill in April (91-4) in favor of allowing chaplains in schools to support teachers.
House Bill 179 is sponsored by Republican Rep. Mark Gidley of Hokes Bluff, according to the Alabama Daily News. “What we’re trying to do is offer to our teachers — teachers only, not students — the opportunity to have a resource that they can go to to get counseling to get help if they’re struggling with something and they don’t have a person they can talk to that will be confidential and non-partial,” Gidley said of the bill. “So many of our teachers are under great stress in their job and other things too and we want to do all we can to give them every resource possible to help preserve them and conserve them,” he added. If the bill is approved, it could take effect as early as July 1, 2025. This would allow chaplains on campuses as early as the 2025-26 school year.
