An article published back in February 2022 detailed five lessons from a couple who’ve been married for 48 years.

“I’ve been married to five women, a different one each decade — and all have been Cathe,” Pastor Greg Laurie says of his beloved wife, Cathe. Greg sense of humor “always gets” Cathe, but she also said “he makes a wise point.”

Change is inevitable. People evolve and grow as the years go by, so how do we adapt to these shifts? Cathe’s first lesson is to “check your heart,” or “examine my motives in wanting my husband to change.” Asking God what fuels our feelings is a core place to start with any growth period, difficult or otherwise.

Choosing a good time to address any problems is always key. “Have those important conversations, but not while emotions are raging, and tempers are frayed. Find a better time to sit together and talk it through,” Cathe writes. Just don’t avoid the difficult conversations altogether. When you do come together, remember to “choose your battles.” No nagging, no silent treatment or verbal manipulation or complaining. These are all important to remember, as well as knowing that your spouse cannot read your mind. “Allow for differences,” particularly in communication, and learn your spouse’s differences well. Before all else, pray.
