A Biden administration rule that will soon go into effect will require firearms dealers to run background checks on purchases that take place outside of brick-and-mortar stores.
The new rule closes a loophole that allows firearms dealers and purchasers to buy and sell without background checks at places like gun shows, according to The Associated Press. The purpose of the rule is to stop the sale of firearms to individuals who are not legally allowed to own a gun.
“This is going to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons,” President Joe Biden said in a statement regarding the rule. “And my administration is going to continue to do everything we possibly can to save lives. Major Changes Coming
The rule, which was only finalized in June, says anyone who sells firearms to predominantly earn a profit must be federally licensed and must conduct background checks, regardless of whether they’re selling online, at gun shows, or in a store, The AP noted.
“The National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry trade group, also has warned of a court challenge if the rule was finalized as written. Lawrence Keane, the foundation’s senior vice president and general counsel, said Thursday that the organization was reviewing the regulation after contending previously that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was overstepping its legal authority,” The AP wrote in their coverage. “Expanding background checks and closing the gun seller loophole is a massive victory for safer communities — and it was made possible thanks to the tireless advocacy of our grassroots movement,” said Moms Demand Action executive director Angela Ferrell-Zabala.
