A bar owner from Portland, Oregon, recently told KPTV that Dry January is having a big impact on the bottom line of their establishment.
Dry January is the annual trend where countless Americans give up drinking alcohol for the whole month. Even before this social trend caught on, January was already the slowest month on the calendar for most bar owners.
One bar owner in Portland, David Sanguinetti of ForeLand Beer, says he has multiple customers who’ve disappeared throughout the month of January, telling them, “we’ll see you in February!” (POPULAR POLL: Have You Already Started Saving For Retirement?)
“The joke is, like, ‘hopefully, maybe,” he told KPTV. While other local establishments offer things like complicated mocktails or other nonalcoholic beverages in the first month of the year, Sanguinetti believes he can’t push through another Dry January, and isn’t willing to install a bar to serve cocktails or mocktails.
How Many People Take Part?
An estimated 25% of Americans over the age of 21 reported that they successfully completed Dry January in 2024, well surpassing the 16% who completed in 2023, according to Civic Science. Participation was particularly high amongst the 21-24-year-old age demographics (35%), tapering off to 31% amongst 25-54-year-olds, and 14% for the 55+ age group.
Some chose to replace their alcohol consumption with soda or seltzers, while other use cannabis/CBS products instead. Most Dry January participants didn’t replace alcohol with anything. (POPULAR POLL: Do You Plan To Travel More In 2025?)
Though the abstinence throughout the month is probably a good thing, most people will go back to their regular drinking habits once January is done. Many wish to reduce their overall consumption, and we pray they do!
