He’s A Man Of Many Myths
Lincoln owned slaves. Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address on the back of an envelope. Lincoln was depressed. All of three of these sentences are untrue, but we bet you’ve heard at least one of them. The Lincoln Cottage debunked many of the myths surrounding our late president all the way back in 2008 (using even older data from scholars), but still these rumors prevail. Who Else Wanted Him Gone?
There are so many rumors about the Lincoln assassination, it is hard to know where to start. An article by Ranker detailed how everyone from his Vice President Andrew Johnson to “Renegade Cotton Merchants” are somehow suspected in his death, though few of these conspiracies hold weight under scrutiny.
A Shot Through The Hat
Late one night, while riding out to Soldiers Home — about three miles from the White House — to conduct some work, someone shot at Lincoln. The bullet missed the president by inches, but blew a hole through his hat. Our commander couldn’t bring himself to believe the attack was purposeful, reportedly saying, “I can’t bring myself to believe that anyone has shot at me or will deliberately shoot at me with the deliberate purpose of killing me.” The truth about the incident remains unknown to this day.
