A post published by Liberty Counsel Action (LCA) in early April argued that pastors and religious leaders have been tricked into silence, leading to mass problems for our population.
LCA are calling for an end to the Johnson Amendment, arguing that it has been seemingly weaponized to silence religious leaders, particularly Christians, by threat of financial ruin. The Johnson Amendment is used to regulate what tax-exempt organizations are allowed to do within the political realm, according to NPR. (TAKE ANOTHER POLL: Is Biblical Stewardship Important To You?)
“It has suppressed the truth, hindered moral accountability within our government, and prevented the church and nonprofit organizations from fulfilling their role to guide our nation’s future,” LCA wrote in their statement. “When our nation desperately needs a moral compass, the Johnson Amendment puts a muzzle on pastors and churches, which is exactly what it was created to do. We have the opportunity right now to repeal this anti-Free Speech IRS law and return free speech to churches and places of worship.”
