It is a truth universally acknowledged that humans absolutely love a mysterious conspiracy theory, and there’s one surrounding the Grand Canyon that’ll blow your mind.

Did you know that there’s a connection between one of America’s most magnificent geological creations and Ancient Egypt? No, we’re not talking about the Smithsonian’s explanation of the Osiris Tower, one of the Grand Canyon’s majestic features. We’re talking about the alleged cover-up of Ancient Egyptian artefacts uncovered in a cave deep within the Grand Canyon, a region no-longer open or accessible to the general public.

It is hard to find any publicly-available information on the discovery of Egyptian-like carvings and other strange happenings within the canyon walls. The story tells of explorer G.E. Kincaid, who traversed the canyon and came across a huge cavern, coated in carvings that resembled ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The Report

“When I saw the chisel marks on the wall inside the entrance, I became interested, securing my gun, and went in,” Kincaid told a newspaper following the discovery, according to IFL Science. “During that trip, I went back several hundred feet along the main passage till I came to the crypt in which I discovered the mummies.” (MORE: NASA Says City-Killer Asteroid No Longer Poses ‘Significant’ Threat)

“The tomb or crypt in which the mummies were found is one of the largest of the chambers, the walls slanting back at an angle of about 35 degrees. On these are tiers of mummies, each one occupying a separate hewn shelf. At the head of each is a small bench, on which is found copper cups and pieces of broken swords. Some of the mummies are covered with clay, and all are wrapped in a bark fabric,” he later noted. “It is worthy of note that all the mummies examined so far have proved to be male, no children or females being buried here. This leads to the belief that this exterior section was the warriors’ barracks.”

Most people believe Kincaid’s story was a hoax, a wild tale designed to draw attention to the natural wonder, perhaps? The thing is, it’s impossible to know the truth, as apparently the U.S. government has completely blocked off the region he made the discovery …
