A Gallup Social Series poll found that more Americans are satisfied with K-12 education in 2024 compared to 2023, but dissatisfaction rates are still higher than positivity rates.
Participants to the poll were asked “how satisfied are you with the quality of education students receive in kindergarten through grade 12 in the U.S. today?” Only 43% said they were either completely or “somewhat” satisfied, with the overall dissatisfaction rate was 55%
In 2023, the dissatisfaction rate was at an all-time high of 63%. “The 2019 and 2020 polls were the only years since 2004 that satisfaction in K-12 education was higher than dissatisfaction, though the difference was marginal. The gap widened significantly between 2021 and 2023, wrote Good Faith Media in their analysis of the poll. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Believe Remote Learning is As Effective As In-Person Learning?)
Fears of Physical Safety & Demographic Differences
The poll also found that 44% of parents of K-12 students fear for their child’s physical safety when at school, which is the highest number in more than 20 years, since 2001. This came in the wake of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Feel Confident About the Current State of the Economy?)
“Republicans’ satisfaction with the quality of K-12 education, which was at its record low last year, has risen eight percentage points to 33%, while Democrats’ is up nine points to 53%. The 20-point satisfaction gap between Democrats and Republicans is the largest of the demographic subgroups,” Gallup wrote in their analysis.
