A study published in 2024 found that Minnesota has the best work-life balance rates of all U.S. states.
Sorbet 2024’s PTO Report, conducted in collaboration with Sapio, found that “Minnesotans are blessed with an average of 18 PTO days each year and are making good use of them, utilizing about 14 days. This translates to an impressive 80% utilization rate, dwarfing the national average of 68%,” Forbes wrote in their analysis of the data.
To literally anyone born outside of the U.S., the idea that American workers do not use all of their PTO — paid time off — is abhorrent. These days are designed to support your life, which is not defined by what you do for work. (TAKE A POLL: Is Faith Integral to Your Understanding of Ethics and Morality?)
Why Is Time Off Important?
“Taking time off from work isn’t just a luxury; it’s a crucial aspect of maintaining productivity and emotional health. This understanding can motivate you to prioritize your well-being and make the most of your time off. Studies consistently show that when employees take time to unwind, they return to work more energized, focused, and ready to contribute creatively. Minnesota’s approach could serve as a model for other states grappling with work-life balance issues,” Forbes continued in their report.
North Carolina is ranked as the worst state for work-life balance, with more than half of PTO time left on the table by employees. California, New York, and Illinois have similarly high rates. (TAKE A POLL: Do You Feel Confident About the Current State of the Economy?)
