Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York challenged Harvard University president Dr. Claudine Gay over the apparent increase in antisemitism on campus. Stefanik highlighted instances of students chanting provocative slogans that hint at violent resistance against the state of Israel and the genocide of Jews, commonly known as “intifada”. Despite acknowledging her personal distaste for such language, Gay doubled down on the university’s commitment to free expression, even if it leans towards hate speech, until it crosses into conduct violating their policies against bullying, harassment, or intimidation. Stefanik further pushed for clarification on Harvard’s stance and steps to counter the rise in racism, antisemitism, and pro-terrorist ideologies among students.
